Toby is based on the West End Gardens site in Haddenham, and his role as a Construction Trainee means no two days are the same. When did you start at Palace Green Homes?

I joined Palace Green Homes in February 2020 as a Construction Trainee, and I was employed to support with a variety of tasks which are providing me with valuable experience and knowledge of the industry. My responsibilities include forklift driving, invoicing, managing site diaries, and covering the assistant manager role when required. I also visit the properties to identify any issues that need resolving by the team before homes are handed over to new residents.

What were you studying before joining Palace Green Homes?

In years 10 and 11, I attended a school that specialises in engineering, and in the summer of 2020, I began looking for a suitable apprenticeship in the engineering industry.  I was fortunate to be offered the opportunity to shadow an independent contractor working for Palace Green Homes and got involved with building fences on several sites. I was delighted when after 4 months, Palace Green Homes offered me a training position.

What’s your favourite thing about working for Palace Green Homes?

Palace Green Homes is an extremely supportive company. I had never considered the construction industry before, but it’s now where I see my career progressing. The team have invested in me and have continued to put my needs above their own. Over the last year, I’ve completed different courses and qualifications that will benefit me hugely in the future, including a forklift driving license and an excavator digger licence. Although I don’t need the digger licence for my current role, Palace Green Homes organised it for me because it was a course I really wanted to take, which highlights their flexibility and adaptiveness to train employees.

What’s one thing that lockdown has taught you, relating to your home?

Lockdown made me realise how lucky I am to work alongside family. Along with the work my uncle carries out, my Dad is also an employee at Palace Green Homes and we continued to work on-site throughout each lockdown. It highlighted the importance of being able to leave the house for work and spend time with family. It was also great to have the opportunity to keep busy and stay active outdoors, which was a luxury most people didn’t have during the first lockdown.

What’s an interesting fact about yourself?

I played roller hockey from the age of 7 and worked my way up to the England team. Our Managing Director took us to Portugal twice a year to train with Portuguese teams which was an amazing experience.
